Project Name: “Zakat for Flood-affected Slum Dwellers, Faridpur
Project Introduction:
Faridpur municipality (population c. 120,000) is located approximately 40 miles south-west of Dhaka. Across Faridpur Sadar, 38% of the population live below the poverty line, lacking the opportunity of a sustainable livelihood. Faridpur lies on the western bank of the Padma River. Low-lying and crossed by several smaller rivers of Bangladesh, Faridpur is prone to flooding. Climate change is accelerating the frequency and intensity of floods to increase. The proposed project has been designed to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for unemployed slum dwellers in Wards 5, 8 and 9 of Faridpur Municipality. The livelihood opportunities have been chosen for their appropriateness given Faridpur’s geographical location on the front-line of climate change. The proposed project will train project participants in livelihood activities and will provide initial capital support or seed money to them for entrepreneurship development. In total the proposed project will provide training to 325 vulnerable people (66% of them are female), ultimately as indirect beneficiaries a total of 1,530 people will be benefitted. Along with providing training and financial support, creating market linkage so that the beneficiaries can develop their income generating activities in a sustainable manner. The participants of the project will be selected through the baseline survey based on several criteria including level of poverty and vulnerability, likeliness to implement the livelihood activities etc.
Overall Objective: Improved living standards and food security for below poverty line households through climate resilient and sustainable livelihood approaches.

- Livelihood skill acquired by 325 people
- Employment or self-employment for 325 people
- Increased use of climate friendly technology
Major Activities: DAM has set some major activities to reach the goal of the Project, every major activity has some sub activities for proper implementation and understanding of the project participants and stakeholders. Major activities are: –
- Selection of Trainee
- 325 unemployed poor people will be selected for providing skill development training
- Skill development training on livelihood trades
- Skill development training on relevant livelihood trades provided to 325 beneficiaries
- Group Formation
- Two groups will be formed for Eco-friendly alternative bricks production (each group consisting of 25 members) and Jute related product development (5 groups each consisting 10 members) for providing financial support. Beneficiaries who have received training on the other trades will receive financial support individually.
- Provide input and cash support
- 325 beneficiaries will receive input and cash support for business operation through the groups.
- Business operation
- DAM will provide support to establish market linkage for smooth operation of the business
