Ramadan food parcel Bhasanchar, 2022

Project Name: “Ramadan food parcel Bhasanchar, 2022”

Project Introduction:
Since August 2017, violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State has driven an estimated 860,000 Rohingya across the border of Teknaf and Ukhiya Sub-Districts of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.  Despite international efforts, the living conditions in the refugee camps in Cox’ bazar remain the matter of concern in terms of accommodation, food security, water and sanitation. Against this backdrop, the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) has invested in developing alternative refugee accommodation on the island of Bhasan Char. On 9 October 2021, the GoB and UNHCR signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing a common protection and policy framework for Rohingya humanitarian response on Bashan Char. The proposed project falls within the UN mandated framework and is designed to start new activities in Bhasan Char, targeting vulnerable refugees who have for too long been outside the inter-agency humanitarian response. The influx of almost 1 million refugees in a small area has also had significant effects on the host communities in Cox’s Bazar District, disrupting the local economy, society and environment. In a significant development, in October 2021, on behalf of the UN system UNHCR signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the GoB agreeing a common protection and policy framework for Rohingya humanitarian response on Bashan Char. The MoU paves the way for a coordinated inter-agency response for the already 30,000 refugees living in Bhasan Char and for the further 60,000 refugees that the GoB anticipates supporting to relocate to Bhasan Char by the end of April 2022. However, in the proposed project DAM has provided food parcel to 2000 most vulnerable Rohingya households during the holy month of Ramadan. The major component of this project is distribution of food support which addresses the immediate food security concern of below-poverty households. This food parcel ensured the nutrition of the most vulnerable Rohingya households. This food parcel includes the following items per household: vermicelli (500gm), Sugar (500gm), Milk Powder (500gm). Through This package vulnerable Rohingya families got the chance to have a feast for Eid-Ul-Fitr festival after the Holy Ramadan.

Impacts of this food parcel:
– Improved Food support ensured for the celebrating end of Ramadan festival;
– Improved access to ensure nutritious food;
– Rohingya Households will be able to celebrate their Eid in a festive manner.

Overall Objective: Ensuring Rohingya households living below poverty-level at Bhasan Char are able to live their lives with dignity and respect.

Expected Output: 2000 Rohingya households have access to balanced nutritious food during month of Ramadan.
