USAID Agricultural Extension Support Activity Project

Project Introduction:
The USAID Agricultural Extension Support Activity (Ag Extension Project-agreement no. AID-388-A-13-00001) is a key part of Bangladesh Feed the Future (FtF) initiative and first project to be awarded to a national NGO under the USAID Forward “Local Systems Framework”. Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) is the lead implementation agency for the five-year project, with CARE Bangladesh and mPower serving as technical partners.

The project aims to enhance access to and utilization of agricultural (Ag) extension services by smallholder farmers– both men and women. It is working for building capacities and creating supports to a farmer demand-driven agricultural extension system, synergized by the use of information communication technology (ICT). It helps to foster a farmer demand-driven extension service system and also helps improving access to quality Ag inputs and markets along with access to finance.

Project Goal: 
Strengthen the existing agricultural extension system in 12 districts in southwest and central Bangladesh in order to sustainable improves food security and nutrition for 108,223 vulnerable women and smallholder farmers.

Project Results framework: 
This goal is supported by three Components and related Tasks:

Component 1: Enhance access to and utilization of agricultural extension services by smallholder farmers (both men and women).
Task 1.1 Community mobilization and formation of smallholder farmer producer groups
Task 1.2 Training, capacity building and institutional strengthening of new and existing producer groups
Task 1.3 Enhance access to quality, affordable inputs and expand opportunities for farmers to sell their outputs
Task 1.4 Link smallholder farmers to formal financial services

Component 2: Expand and strengthen ICT mechanisms to increase access to agricultural market information, knowledge and technologies.

Task 2.1 Develop a strategy for expanded use of ICT in extension services.

Task 2.2 Development of user-friendly ICT tools to increase farmer and extension agent access to agricultural production and market information.

Component 3: Strengthen capacity of agricultural extension service agents (public and private) to proactively respond to the needs smallholder farmers, with an emphasis on women.
Task 3.1: Increase skills and capacity of public sector agricultural extension agents in providing extension services
Task 3.2: Increase or develop the capacity of private-sector extension agents in providing extension services
Task 3.3 Increase capacity of agricultural extension agents in the use of ICT tools
Task 3.4 Enhance mobility and communication resources of extension workers to better reach smallholder farmers, especially women

Task 3.5: Intensive work with public and private extension agents in 4 selected upazilas to demonstrate improved Ag. extension service delivery through block- level ag extension centers.

  • The project will work with relevant government departments and private agencies, including the Germplasm Centre of the BAU, RTM International, BARC, BRRI, Horticulture Board, Directorate of Agriculture Extension, Agriculture Information Services Centers and Department of Agriculture Marketing all the concern shall contribute a lot for Food Security and Nutrition Improvement; thus the project shall support in achieving the Millennium Development Goal of the Government of Bangladesh.
