UCLC learner gets 2nd prize in art competition

Md. Shimul, a learner of Alor Bhuban Urban Community Learning Centre (UCLC) of Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) got 2nd prize of an art competition organized by English Medium School Scholastica marking Victory Day. The competition was taken place at the premises of Scholastica’s Mirpur campus on 16 December 2015. A total of twenty one learners of the project participated in the program. The art competition was abuzz followed by a cultural function.

The learners of Scholastica & UCLC jointly participated in the competition. Md. Bijay Ahmed, another learner of Asar Alo UCLC also got a special prize.

On the other hand, learners of Jyoti, Rangdhanu and Asar-Alo UCLC participated in the cultural function. Audience of the programme became amazed by watching the performance of the UCLC learners. These learners are mainly hailed from poorest families of Mirpur slum and the students & audience of Scholastica mostly from rich families.

The Senior Vice-Principal & Head of Scholastica Senior Campus, Mirpur, Farah Sophia Ahmed told that Scholastica and Education Sector of DAM had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) where we would work together for the quality education of UCLC and its Co-curriculum activities. Abul Baraq Alvi – Professor, Faculty of Fine Arts, DU and Ashok Karmakar, Chief Artists, The Daily Prothom Alo were present there as Chief Guest & Special Guest respectively.

The learners of UCLC & Scholastica will arrange cross visit to learn from each other. Mentioned that UCLC project is being implemented to provide alternative educational opportunities for the left-out, school drop-outs and working children at primary and secondary level of Urban Slum.

Moreover the other aims of the project are to increase income and employment opportunities through vocational training. At present, 750 learners are being imparted education and empowered through the project.
