Odhikar Project

Project Name: Odhikar- Street & Working Children Outreach Project in Kamalapur, Dhaka.

Project Introduction: Odhikar – (rights for) Street and Working Children Outreach Project has been developed as a pilot initiative, building on the experience of the DiC approach but seeking to avoid the expense of DAM undertaking the delivery of wrap-around services in one physical drop-in centre. The proposed initiative significantly reduces the cost per beneficiary (to less than £15/beneficiary/month) compared to the centre-based approach yet retains many of the same services.

The proposed initiative will support 240 street and working children through outreach services. Their immediate safety will be addressed by project worker efforts to help them to escape from dangerous places of work and to receive nutritious food and health care. Education and vocational training will be provided where appropriate to help build the children’s medium- and longer-term chances of finding a pathway out of poverty and off the streets. For those streets and working children who don’t have families, the project will offer outreach services to raise their awareness and skills in child development and child rights. The project will proactively work with other service providers, linking children (and their families where appropriate) with service providers such as micro-finance and employment agencies.
