Dhaka Ahsania Mission received WHO Regional Director’s Award for outstanding contribution in Tobacco Control

Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) has received World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director’s Special Recognition Award for excellent contributions to tobacco control in Bangladesh. Other awardees are- Dr. Biman Natung, chief of Voluntary Health Association of Arunachal Pradesh of India, and the Consumer Protection Board of Thailand.

World Health Organization (WHO) Bangladesh office handed over the WHO Special Recognition Award to Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) on 26 July, 2020, Sunday at 1:30pm for its unique contribution on tobacco control in Bangladesh. WHO Bangladesh Representative Dr. Bardan Jung Rana handed over the award to DAM Health Sector Director Mr. Iqbal Masud. During the award hand over among others were present WHO National Professional Officer Bangladesh Dr. Syed Mahfuzul Haque, Team Assistant (NCD) WHO, Ms. Suraiya Akhter, DAM Health Sector’s Assistant Director and Project Coordinator (Tobacco Control Project) Md. Mukhlesur Rahman and Senior Program Officer of Health Sector Ms. Sharmeen Rahman.

The award was announced by the WHO on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2020. Usually this award is handed over in the national program on World No Tobacco Day observance. But this year the award has been handed over at the WHO Bangladesh Office considering the corona pandemic situation. DAM received this special recognition for its significant contribution for stopping ill tactics of the tobacco industries and protecting the youth from tobacco and nicotine use.
